Ben Wrucke presents on Clinical Engineering Experience
At the most recent general meeting, one of our members, sophomore Ben Wrucke, presented on his experience shadowing at St Luke's under a clinical engineer. Ben described the process he went through to begin shadowing, from a single shadow visit to signing up for a more consistent schedule. He then taught our group more about the different openings for engineers in a clinical setting, and the various levels of education and experience that went along with each. Ben also taught the group more about the heart and how the main equipment Ben has witnessed at St Luke's, ventricular assist devices (VADs), works and the process completed to determine the patient's receiving these devices. He also encouraged group participation as he provided different scenarios with the equipment and what different measurements can tell you about the patient as well as the device itself. These exercises promote troubleshooting with creative problem solving, which is what we strive to assist our members in learning and developing these skills. Ben gave a fantastic presentation, and our present members benefitted from his insight in the clinical engineering field and just one of many opportunities available with a Biomedical Engineering degree.
